Choosing a magnifier for close stitching

Which magnifier suits you depends mostly on whether you want your hands free and how much light you have to work with.

A hands free magnifier hangs from a cord or sits on a stand in front of you, leaving both hands for the needle - the most comfortable option for long sessions on high count fabric. A headband magnifier does the same job but travels with you and stays put when you move, which suits stitching away from a fixed chair. A magnifying glass on a stand is the simplest choice for occasional close work, such as reading a symbol on a chart rather than stitching under magnification throughout.

Light matters as much as magnification: a clip-on LED lamp attached to a frame or table edge removes the shadow your own hands cast over the work, which is often what makes small stitches hard to see rather than the size of the stitches themselves.
