Which tapestry needle size do I need?

Tapestry needle sizing runs backwards to what you might expect: the higher the number, the finer the needle. Size 24 and 26 are the usual choices for 14 count aida, 26 or 28 for finer evenweave and linen, and the low numbers - 16, 18 and 20 - are for tapestry canvas and thick wool.

The point is blunt on all of them. That is what separates a tapestry needle from an embroidery needle: it passes between the fabric threads rather than piercing them, so it will not split the threads of your work or the weave underneath.

Most come in packs of two, and they are worth replacing when the plating wears, since a rough needle drags on the thread.
