Which needle size for which fabric

Cross stitch needles have a blunt point that slides between the fabric threads without splitting them, and a long eye that takes several strands of cotton. The number works backwards - the higher the size, the finer the needle.

As a quick rule, 22 suits coarser fabrics, 24 and 26 cover the 14 and 16 count aida most kits use, and 28 is for fine evenweave and higher counts. For wool work on canvas you want the larger gauges - see our tapestry needles. For the full fabric-by-fabric answer, our guide to which needle size to use for cross stitching walks through every count.

Most packs here contain six needles, with Permin's economy packs of 25 for stitchers who lose them down the sofa. Gold-plated needles resist tarnish and slip through fabric a little more smoothly - worth it if you stitch daily.
