Choosing a needle threader

A needle threader is a small tool that pushes your thread through the eye of a needle, saving your eyes and your patience. The right one depends on the needle you are threading.

A simple wire-loop threader - like the DMC needle threader - is the most versatile: the fine diamond-shaped wire slips through almost any eye, then you hook the thread and pull it back through. For thicker yarns, wools and stranded cottons, a flat threader with a larger opening (such as the Clover yarn threader) grips the fibres without splitting them.

If threading small-eye needles is the struggle, an automatic or desk-top threader does the aligning for you: sit the needle in the cradle, lay the thread across and press the lever. Several also have a built-in thread cutter, so you snip and thread in one place. Fully automatic threaders suit standard sewing and embroidery needles rather than very fine beading or quilting needles.

For dim light or fine work, an LED-lit threader lights the eye as you go. Whichever you choose, a threader is the cheapest way to make every project start more easily.
