Permin of Copenhagen's aida comes in 14, 16 and 18 count, its linen in 28, 32 and 35 count, and there is 22 count hardanger for cut-work. Most pieces are fat quarters, 65 by 50 cm for aida and 70 by 50 cm for linen, and the popular shades are also sold by the metre, 130 cm wide for aida and 140 cm for linen.
Permin aida is the straightforward choice for counted cross stitch: it has a light stiffening that washes out after stitching, and the count is the number of stitches to the inch, so 14 count stitches larger than 16 or 18.
Permin linen is an evenweave with the same thread count in both directions and is usually worked over two threads, so 28 count gives 14 stitches to the inch and 32 count gives 16, the same finished size as 14 and 16 count aida on a finer, softer cloth. The 35 count white linen is for very fine work over one or two threads.
The 22 count hardanger is 100 percent cotton with a 2 by 2 thread grid, woven for Norwegian cut-work and usable for small cross stitch at 22 stitches to the inch.
Aida shades run from Almond, Natural Light and Rustic to Icelandic Blue, Riviera Coral and Christmas Red, and the linens from undyed and China Pearl to Star Sapphire and Rose.
